Thirsty City Walk and Workshop Series in collaboration with Youth4Water present:
"Toilet to Tap" - Bus Tour & Workshop to celebrate World Toilet DayToilet to Tap Tour 2008 RC Harris Filtration Plant

Bus Tour:
1pm @ the Jonathan Ashbridge Park at Queen Street East and Woodward Ave.
Led by Helen Mills of Lost Rivers

The bus tour will take us to the Ashbridges Bay Sewage Treatment Plant and then we will meander through the neighbourhood passing by several points of interest before ending at the R.C. Harris Drinking Water Filtration Plant. We will explore the history of Ashbridge's Bay and learn about local lost creeks, springs, ponds, original and current ecosystem, the building of the city's modern wastewater and drinking water treatment infrastructure and some of the older treatment systems that failed to work.  From the R.C. Harris Filtration Plant we will walk west along the beach to Balmy Beach Club, then north to St Aidan's Church along the lost creek that once flowed there.

Workshop and Discussion:
2:30pm @ St. Aidan's Church, 70 Silver Birch Ave. (at Queen St. East, four blocks west of Victoria Park Ave)
Facilitated by RiverSides and featuring two guest speakers:

  • Andrew Hellebust of Rivercourt Engineering will discuss alternative wastewater treatment methods and the soft path approach to water management
  • Nicholas Schulz of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will discuss the recent developments in the Ontario Clean Water Act
  • Youth4Water, in preparation for their provincial youth roundtable on source water protection, will be facilitating a discussion and asking participants to share their perspectives on local drinking water
